表紙の虫は、ナミアゲハです。春から秋にかけて日本全国で成虫がみられ、一般的なアゲハチョウとして古くから親しまれています。生まれたころの幼虫は白黒の体色をしていますが、脱皮を重ねると体色が緑に変化して目玉のような特徴のある模様が目立つようになります。

ミカン科の植物を食草としており、新芽を好んで食べるため害虫としての扱いも受けることがあります。夏季はサナギになると1週間ほどで羽化し、ひと夏の間に4～5回発生しますが、冬季にかかるとサナギは数カ月羽化せずに越冬します。サナギが黒ずみ始めると翅が次第に透けて見え始め、やがて黒地に黄色の斑紋が入った翅をもつ成虫が姿を現します。
